I am going to get LASIK today (6/5) at Mann Eye! I have very high astigmatism > 4, so there is a greater probability of needing an enhancement, but they are optimistic they can get me to at least driving clarity.

Very nervous about it, but everyone I have met at their office I have really liked, not sure how they find so many great employees.

Can't believe that it could be possible to wake up and actually see, have been in contacts since kindergarten (coke bottle dorky ones at that :) )

Wish me luck!

Having a surgeon that you can recommend is what every Lasik doctor desires for every patient. Your trust, enthusiasm, and excellent result is the kind of advertising and satisfaction that a doctor cannot buy, but not everyone lives within a reasonable distance to your surgeon. Some will need to find their own.

Lasik is so often "sold" like a commodity that many may consider one Lasik clinic about the same as the next. That is not at all the case.

For those who are not near your doctor, they may want to use our “50 Tough Questions For Your Lasik Doctor” to evaluate a potential surgeon. Hopefully they find the same results as you!

Sheryl,

It is great that you had such a quick vision recovery after your Lasik, however not everyone will have the same experience.

I work for a nonprofit Lasik patient advocacy. We do not provide Lasik, just Lasik information and we certify Lasik doctors.

For some, Lasik is more like a six month process than a 20-Minute Miracle. Although many, like you, have almost instant results with no adverse events, it is relatively common for patients to have some fluctuation in vision, dry eyes, and other small, but noticable, adverse events during the early Lasik healing stages.

Also, not everyone has eyes like yours. Your friends would not expect to see well if they were to put in your contact lenses. Neither should they have the same expectation of result as you have achieved. Everyone is unique. Only after a comprehensive evaluation from a competent doctor can someone get a good idea what can be expected.

Your experience is obviously the most someone can hope for and you are a living example that Lasik can be quick, painless, and successful, but others may need more caution.

Funny you mentioned your eyes watering with the wind. I experienced the very same thing yesterday when I was walking with my girlfriend. Except...it was really the first time I realized I don't have to worry about may contacts!! My contacts with the wind (and water) moved around quite a bit and sometimes popped out. My first reaction with them watering from the wind was to dry off my eyes so they wouldn't pop out. I caught myself (and laughed) that "I don't have contacts"!!!! So....if you are a contact wearer that worries about these things, you will love lasik!!!!

Sheryl,

I have loved reading your blog, everything that you described was exactly how I feel and have felt wearing glasses for 40 years. I panic every morning that I can not find my glasses, and would love to be able to see. You have given me the knowledge and courage to schedule and go thru with Lasik. You described things very well. I am interested in having Lasik, either here in baton rouge or with the Mann Clinic in Houston. I enjoyed reading about your Mom's surgery, she gives me courage.

I am happy to say that I am doing very well from my Lasik procedure. Unlike Sheryl, my eyes are taking a little longer for me to see like I should (age and I had my lasik done "blended" - like wearing monovision contacts). Everything Sheryl has said about the procedure and after is 100% correct. It is great and I highly suggest this to anyone that has to wear glasses/contacts all the time. I also highly recommend Mann Eye Center. The doctors and staff do a great job making you feel relaxed about the procedure and in their ability to perform Lasik. As Sheryl said, "you have only one set of eyes so you want to put your trust in reputable professionals".
